The Old PowerStation Mortlake, SW14

The Old PowerStation - Mortlake, SW14

2 units (2 available)

Built in 1901 Tideway Yard and the Old Power Station was originally the site of an electricity generating station and Borough parks department. Tideway Wharf was imaginatively converted in 1986 to provide office units ranging from 83 to 1,500 square feet. Many of the units have beautiful views of the Thames, with access to balconies or terraces overlooking the river. Many have their own WC and kitchen facilities. A simple licence agreement enables you to secure your chosen office immediately without the need to commit for more than six months. Tideway wharf is on the bend in the River Thames on the last straight of the Putney Mortlake boat race overlooking the fields on the Chiswick side of the River.

Both Tideway Yard and the Old Power Station are located within a 5 minute walk of Barnes Bridge Station with regular trains to Putney, Clapham Junction and Waterloo.  Mortlake Station is also close by.  The 419 and 209 buses pass the entrance providing services between Richmond and Hammersmith.

The history of The Old PowerStation

The Tideway Wharf site, including Tideway Yard and The Old Power Station, was constructed in 1901.  The Tideway Yard buildings were originally the stables and coach houses for Barnes Council refuse depot. The council depot had a number of unusual uses over the years including a de-lousing station, air raid warden barracks and the borough mortuary!

The Old Powerstation in 1927 The Old Power Station also used to belong to Barnes Council and the borough made its own electricity there, using coal or coke brought up the Thames in barges.  The London Electricity Board took over the Old Power Station and it gradually fell into disuse and dereliction.

In 1981 Richmond Borough Council decided that they had no further use for the buildings and their demolition was proposed.   After much outrage from local Mortlake residents a competition was held to find a local architect /developer to develop the site while retaining the best of the original buildings.  The winning design by Gillian Harwood and Philip Lancashire included residential apartments (Tideway Wharf) and office space for new businesses to begin and thrive.  The refurbishment and development works were undertaken by Marston Properties.   Many of the original features remain at both The Old Power Station and Tideway Yard.

The refurbished Tideway Yard and Old Power Station offices were opened in 1986.

Marston  Properties have recently purchased the Limes & Old Fire Station which are located between Tideway Yard and Old Power Station.  The Limes dates back to the 1720s with later additions and features in 2 paintings by JMW Turner.  Notable former residents of this property include the Franks family (1974), Lady Byron (wife of poet Lord Byron) and Quintin Hogg (founder of Polytechnic movement).  The Limes is a listed grade II* for architectural merit and historical significance.  For further information on this site please see the Development Department pages.

Today Tideway Yard, The Old Power Station and The Limes are owned and managed by Marston Properties Ltd.   The site is located within Mortlake Conservation area.
